Strengthening Democracy: Role of Judiciary

Strengthening Democracy: Role of Judiciary

Democracy and the rule of law are inextricably connected with each other. Urgent steps are needed to establish a rule of law society in India, without which our fundamental credentials as a democracy will be seriously undermined.

The Indian legal system is faced with numerous crises starting with the fundamental challenge of enforcing the rule of law. While the system of governance in India is based on law, this does not necessarily translate into the behaviour of those who govern and the governed to have respect for the law. This lack of respect translates into serious threats to democracy as the legal system may not be able to respond to the growing sense of lack of trust and faith in the institutions.

The proposed three seminars intend to deal with these and other related issues. The participants include judges, lawyers, civil society groups (NGOs), women's organization, media practitioners, social scientists and bureaucrats.
